The following bills introduced in the current session of the Michigan Legislature apply to ownership and hunting with dogs.  To obtain a copy of the bills, go to the Legislative Web Page at and write the bill number in the appropriate box. 5-29-2007  HB 4860  Pet shop license act. Revise fees, create fund, earmark certain fees and administrative fines to the agriculture licensing and inspection fees fund.  Referred to Committee on Appropriations.

5-24-2007  SB 531  Prohibit use of tranquilizer shots in hunting. Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

5-10-2007  HB 4742  Increase penalties for killing or torturing animals in perpetration of domestic violence. Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

5-10-2007  HB 4741  Include in personal protection order a prohibition against harming animals owned by petitioner.  Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

5-03-2007  SB 473  Require department of natural resources to maintain a website showing lands open for hunting.  Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

4-26-2007  SB 465  Prohibit employment decisions based upon ownership of a firearm. Referred to Committee on Commerce and Tourism.

4-25-2007  SB 442  Require DNR to protect the right to hunt. Under the bill, in furtherance of Article IV, Section 52 of the State Constitution, the DNR would have to protect and promote the people’s right to lawfully hunt and harvest game that is the property of the people of the State. Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

4-25-2007  SB 441  Require department of natural resources to protect the right to hunt and fish. The bill would amend Part 5 to include among the DNR’s duties the protection and promotion of the exercise of the people’s right to lawfully hunt and fish and harvest game and fish that are the property of the state.  Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

4-25-2007  SB 440  Authorize the natural resources commission to establish policies for protection of the right to hunt. Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

4-25-2007  SB 438  Allow the application of hunting, fishing, or fur harvester’s application for hunting, fishing, or fur harvester’s license to serve as voter registration.  Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

4-12-07   HB 4597  Provide for the promotion of hunting on department of natural resources controlled land.  Referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.

3-29-2007  HB 4554  Allow use of smokeless gun powder in some circumstances as black powder in hunting.  Referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.

3-29-2007  HB 4552  Revise penalties for animal crimes to allow consecutive sentencing. Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

3-29-2007  HB 4551 Increase penalties for animal abuse under certain circumstances. Referred to Committee on judiciary.

3-29-2007  HB 4550  Sentencing guidelines for certain crimes involving animal abuse.  Revise to reflect increased penalties.  Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

3-22-2007  HB 4524  Eliminates the fee for hunting and fishing licenses obtained by active military affairs personnel. Referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.

3-20-2007  HB 4497  Prohibit use of steel jaw traps to take game. Referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.

3-14-2007  SB 350  Create Animal Welfare Fund from income tax check-off approved on state income tax form.  Referred to Committee on Finance.

3-14-2007  SB 349  Provide for check-off option on state income tax form for animal welfare fund. Referred to Committee on Finance.

3-14-2007  SB 347  Provide for income tax check-off for separate contributions designation schedule and check-off for breast cancer. (Also includes check-off for Animal Welfare Fund). Referred to Committee on Finance.

3-14-2007  SB 346   Prohibit & provide penalties for fleeing the scene of dog or wolf-dog cross bite incident or failing to provide assistance to bitten individual. Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

3-6-2007   HB 4407  Allow the use of raised platforms when hunting fox or coyote.  Referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.

2-28-2007  SB 286  Provide for fund-raising vehicle registration specialty plates for Ducks Unlimited.  Referred to Committee on Transportation.

2-17-2007  HB 4261  Provide for convention and tourism promotion act. Create new Act.
Referred to Committee on Commerce.

2-7-2007  HB 4218  Require teachers to provide alternatives for students who have a moral objection to dissection. Referred to Committee on Education.

2-7-2007  HB 4217  Consumer protection.  Clarify unfair trade practices. Application of Michigan consumer protection act to actions expressly permitted by law. Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

2-1-2007  HB 4188  Include conservation districts as qualified organization allowed to conduct charitable gaming. Referred to committee on Regulatory Reform.

1-25-2007 SB 83  Provide for access to voter registration applications for hunting, fishing, and fur harvester license applications.  Referred to Committee on Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.

1-25-2007 HB 4139  Specify sodomy of an animal for inclusion in sex offender registration
requirement.  Referred to Committee on Families and Children’s Services.

1-22-2007  HB 4065  Prohibit and provide penalties for fleeing the scene of dog or wolf-dog cross bite incident or failing to provide assistance to bitten individual.  Referred to Committee on Judiciary.

1-22-2007  HB 4016  Revise opening day for deer hunting season to second Saturday in November.  Referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.

1-22-2007   House Joint Resolution A The People have a right to hunt or fish for, and to harvest, game or fish that are the property of the state and are held in the public trust.
